The ONS doesn’t publish business counts for Chester on its own, so these figures cover the whole Cheshire West and Chester borough, which also takes in Ellesmere Port, Northwich and Winsford. According to the ONS UK Business Counts for 2026, the borough has 13,845 VAT or PAYE registered businesses, and 88.4% of them employ fewer than ten people.
What stands out is the professional sector. Professional, scientific and technical firms make up 19.7% of the borough’s businesses (2,725), a bigger share than in Manchester (18.1%) or Liverpool (15.8%). Construction follows with 1,560 businesses, then business support services and leisure. Agriculture, forestry and fishing accounts for 890 businesses, or 6.4%, a reminder of how rural much of the borough is.
For consultants, solicitors, accountants and specialist firms, the website often does the first part of the selling. It needs to look credible. Explain clearly. And make booking a conversation easy.

A City Centre With Fresh Investment
Chester Northgate’s first phase cost £70m and opened in late 2022. It brought an indoor market with about 30 traders, which Invest Chester says has served over 6 million customers since opening, along with a six-screen cinema, an 800-space car park and 10,000 sq ft of offices. Phase 2 will add more than 400 homes, with a development partner confirmed in 2025. More people living in and visiting the centre. More people searching for somewhere to eat, shop and book.
