Birmingham has more than one and a half times as many businesses as Manchester. We help the small ones stand out to local customers who are searching right now. Steady work. Honest reporting. No jargon. Local SEO from £250 a month, full SEO from £400.
The ONS counts 38,605 VAT or PAYE registered businesses in the Birmingham council area (UK Business Counts, 2026). That’s more than one and a half times the Manchester council area (24,550), and the largest of the cities we cover with SEO pages. 89% are micro businesses with fewer than ten people.
The biggest groups are professional and technical firms (5,245), retail (4,695), construction (3,795) and business support (3,305). Then comes something you don’t see in the top five for Manchester or Liverpool: health, with 2,900 businesses. Clinics, practices and care providers are a big part of Birmingham’s local economy, and their patients find them on Google.
A market this size cuts both ways. More customers searching. More businesses trying to be found. The firms that win are clear about who they serve and where.
We’re a Manchester team, based in Whitefield, with design, development and marketing under one roof. We work with Birmingham and West Midlands businesses over video call. Everything from the first audit to your monthly report happens online, so being in a different region makes no difference to the service you get.
Real local searches for Birmingham, with monthly UK volume bands and difficulty ratings from Ahrefs (October 2026).
| Search | Monthly searches | How hard to rank |
|---|---|---|
| restaurants birmingham | 1,000+ | Easy |
| seo birmingham | 1,000+ | Easy |
| local seo birmingham | 100+ | Not rated |
| estate agents birmingham | 100+ | Medium |
| plumber birmingham | 100+ | Hard |
| electrician birmingham | 100+ | Hard |
| accountants birmingham | 100+ | Hard |
Birmingham’s pattern is almost the reverse of Liverpool’s.
Trades are hard here. In Liverpool, “plumber” is rated Easy. In Birmingham, plumbers and electricians are both rated Hard. A bigger city means more established firms and more directories fighting for the same few spots. For a Birmingham trade, the realistic route is the map pack and area searches (“electrician Erdington”, “plumber Kings Heath”), not the city-wide term on day one.
Restaurants are wide open. “Restaurants birmingham” gets over a thousand searches a month and is rated Easy. For independents, a strong Google Business Profile and a site that makes booking and calling easy can pay off quickly.
Estate agents have a chance. In the other cities we looked at, “estate agents” was rated Hard. In Birmingham it’s Medium, which makes it one of the better professional-service openings in the city.
Accountants face a crowd. Rated Hard, in a city with over 5,000 professional firms. Specialist searches, like accountants for a particular trade or area, are the smarter place to start.
In October 2026 we checked the websites of businesses ranking for a few everyday Birmingham searches. The samples are small, so read this as what we saw, not as a verdict on every Birmingham business.
We checked five accountants’ websites. All five had tap-to-call links. But 4 of the 5 had no local business schema, the behind-the-scenes code that tells Google your location, services and opening hours. One had a 2018 footer, was running website software from around 2020 and had no main heading on the homepage. Another sent a very heavy homepage before any images loaded.
For a sector rated Hard, those are surprising gaps, and gaps are where a smaller firm can get ahead.
Of four electricians’ sites:
A customer with a tripped fuse box won’t wait five seconds, and a slow page is a poor first impression however good the electrician.
We checked three independent restaurants in the Jewellery Quarter. All three linked to table booking. But 2 of the 3 had no tap-to-call link, 2 had no main heading, and 2 had no restaurant schema.
Birmingham shares its name with Birmingham, Alabama, and some search tools mix the two up. Google is generally good at showing UK results to UK searchers, but it’s another reason to make your location unmistakable: “Birmingham, West Midlands” in your listings, a B postcode on your site, and pages that name the areas you actually serve.
Someone in Sutton Coldfield, Moseley or Harborne may well search for their own area rather than “Birmingham”. And Google’s map results lean heavily on how close you are to the person searching. So instead of throwing everything at one city-wide keyword, we build your visibility out from where you are.
The Jewellery Quarter shows how much local businesses invest in their area. Its BID was set up in 2012 and renewed in 2022 for a third term, with over 87% of businesses voting in favour (JQBID). The Colmore Business District BID has been running since 2009. Those schemes bring people into the area. Making sure they find you on their phone once they’re there is our part.

Both have a 6-month minimum, because SEO takes a few months to gather pace. After that it’s month to month. We’ll give you an exact price once we’ve looked at your site and your part of Birmingham.

Rankings, visitors and enquiries, in one short report.
We rebuilt Wrapd’s website around enquiries and rebuilt their Google Ads to match. Their conversion rate doubled, their cost per enquiry halved, and they had 338 more leads than the same period the year before. The lesson applies to SEO too. Visitors only matter if your website turns them into calls and bookings.
“They’ve built us two cracking websites, a custom questionnaire for our backend, and have been a huge help with SEO and Google Ads/PPC. Since working with them, the quality and consistency of our leads has massively improved.”
If your server takes five seconds to answer, SEO has to work much harder. Our websites are fast and ready for Google from launch. £1,000 to start, then from £200 a month, and after 12 months the website is yours to keep. See the website plan →

Yes. We’re based in Whitefield and do almost all our work over video call, whether you’re in the next town or the next region. What counts is knowing Birmingham’s searches and competition, which is what this page is about.
It varies a lot by sector. Ahrefs rates “restaurants birmingham” as Easy and “estate agents birmingham” as Medium, while plumbers, electricians and accountants are all rated Hard. For harder sectors, we start with your neighbourhood and specialist searches, then build towards the city-wide terms.
Usually Sutton Coldfield first. It has its own postcodes and identity, and searches that name it put you up against far fewer businesses than the city-wide terms. Once that’s strong, we can widen out to nearby areas and the wider city.
That’s the core of local SEO. We set up and look after your Google Business Profile, help you gather reviews, and make sure your name, address and phone number match everywhere. With so many businesses in the city centre, a complete, active profile makes a real difference.
Your SEO is carried out by our specialist SEO partner and managed by us. You deal with Dan and Jordan, who agree the plan, check the work and send you a plain-English report each month.
No. Nobody controls Google, and in a city with nearly 39,000 businesses anyone promising a guaranteed position is guessing. We promise honest work, clear reporting and focus on the searches that bring in customers.
A 6-month minimum, then month to month.
No hard sell. Just an honest conversation about your website, your map listing and the businesses around you, and where the quickest wins are. It’s all by phone or video call, so being in a different region makes no difference.
