Preston business

Nearly Nine In Ten Preston Businesses Are Micro Firms.

The ONS UK Business Counts for 2026 put Preston at 6,130 VAT or PAYE registered businesses, and 88.8% of them have fewer than ten staff. Just 25 employ 250 people or more. It’s a city run by owner-managers.

Two sectors are almost level at the top. Professional, scientific and technical firms make up 13.7% of businesses (840), and construction 12.9% (795). Retail follows with 680, then business support services and hospitality. In plain terms, Preston is full of accountants, consultants, builders, joiners and shops, most of them with a handful of people doing everything themselves, including the website.

That’s who we built our plan for. We’re a Manchester web design team, based in Whitefield, and we work with Preston businesses over video call. One 20-minute call to start. A homepage design to approve on screen. A website you own after a year.

A City Centre With Its Own Business Voice

Preston has had a Business Improvement District since 2009, run by the North and Western Lancashire Chamber of Commerce. City-centre businesses with a rateable value of £10,000 or more pay a 1% levy, and the BID runs a Special Projects Fund that announced its 2025 recipients. If you trade in the centre, you’re part of a business community that already invests in bringing people into town. Your website should make the most of every one of them.

Local search demand

The Preston Searches That Bring In Work.

Here’s what people in and around Preston search for in the sectors we work with most. The figures come from Ahrefs’ UK data, October 2026, which gives bands rather than exact numbers.

The difficulty is Ahrefs’ own rating of how hard it is to reach page one.

SearchSearches a monthHow hard to rank
restaurants preston1,000+Easy
emergency plumber preston100+Easy
electrician preston100+Easy
accountants preston lancashire100+Not rated

builders prestonFewer than 100Not rated
web design preston100+Medium

What Stands Out

Preston is easier to rank in than most cities. Restaurants, emergency plumbers and electricians are all rated Easy. Compare that with Liverpool, where electricians are rated Medium, or Chester, where restaurants are. For a Preston business, a well-built website has a better chance of reaching page one than the same website in a bigger city.

Restaurants get the most searches by far. More than 1,000 a month, and rated Easy. If you run a restaurant, café or bar in Preston, your own website can realistically compete for those diners instead of leaving them to listing sites. Restaurant websites

Urgent jobs get searched urgently. “Emergency plumber preston” is searched more than 100 times a month. Those people want a phone number they can tap, now. That single button matters more than anything else on a trade website.

People add “Lancashire”. “Accountants preston lancashire” gets more than 100 searches a month on its own. Some people search with the county, so we make sure your website mentions both. Websites for accountants

Builders: fewer searches, bigger jobs. “Builders preston” gets fewer than 100 searches a month. The searches are there, but they’re spread across specific jobs, which is why a page for each service you offer (extensions, roofing, renovations) does better than one general page.

What we found

Preston’s Page One Is Wide Open.

In October 2026 we looked at the search results for “web design preston”, then checked the websites of Preston builders, plumbers and accountants that came up in local searches. These are small samples, so read them as “of the sites we checked”, not as a rule for the whole city.

No Preston agency owns the search. For “web design preston”, most results were location pages from agencies based elsewhere, alongside a freelancer and a budget offer advertising five-page websites for under £250. One result was a web designer in a different Preston altogether, in the United States. No single local firm dominated.

Not one of the 11 business websites we checked had local business structured data. That’s the behind-the-scenes information that tells Google your business name, address, phone number and opening hours, so it can show them in local results. Across plumbers, builders and accountants, the count was 0 out of 11. Every website we build includes it as standard.

Builders (5 Checked)

  • Directories took the top four results, above every builder’s own website.
  • 3 of the 5 builder sites had no tap-to-call link on a phone. A customer has to copy the number, or give up.
  • One, made with a hosting company’s page editor, had 31 of its 47 images with no description for screen readers or Google, and five separate main headings on one page.

Plumbers (4 Checked)

  • All four had secure connections and tap-to-call links, which is good.
  • 2 of the 4 had no main page heading, one of the first things Google reads to understand what a page is about.
  • 1 still showed a 2024 copyright date.
  • Trade directories took three of the top four places.

Accountants (2 Checked)

Both worked well on a phone, with tap-to-call. Neither had local business structured data.

What it means for you. In Preston, small businesses aren’t losing to slick competitors. They’re losing to directories, and to small gaps in their own websites. A fast, well-structured website that covers the basics properly stands out here more than it would in most places.
