SEO Preston

SEO In Preston. More Calls From Google For Owner-Run Businesses.

Electricians in Fulwood, restaurants on Friargate, builders working from Penwortham to Longridge. When someone nearby searches for what you do, they should find you. Not a directory. Not a business in a different Preston. SEO from £400 a month, local SEO from £250.

Preston, by the numbers

A City Of Owner-Managers. With The Trades Near The Top.

The ONS counts 6,130 VAT or PAYE registered businesses in the Preston council area (UK Business Counts, 2026). 88.8% of them have fewer than ten people, and only 25 employ 250 or more.

Two groups sit almost level at the top: professional, scientific and technical firms (840) and construction (795, or 12.9% of the total). Retail comes next with 680, then business support services with 475 and hospitality with 390.

That shape matters for search. In a firm of three or four people, nobody’s job is “the website”, so the Google listing gets set up once and left alone. Meanwhile the customers are searching on their phones for an electrician today, an accountant who knows Lancashire, or somewhere to eat tonight. Whoever looks after the basics tends to pick up those calls.

We’re two experienced specialists based in Whitefield, Manchester, with design, development and marketing under one roof. We work with Preston businesses over video call. You get a short call when there’s something worth talking about, and a plain-English report every month. Hands-on help at a sensible price.

The searches that matter

The Preston Searches Worth Being Found For.

Real local searches for Preston, with monthly UK volume bands and difficulty ratings from Ahrefs (October 2026).

SearchMonthly searchesHow hard to rank
restaurants preston1,000+Easy
seo preston100+Easy
emergency plumber preston100+Easy
electrician preston100+Easy
accountants preston lancashire100+Not rated
estate agents preston100+Hard
builders prestonFewer than 100Not rated

Most of the local searches are rated Easy. Restaurants, electricians and emergency plumbers are all Easy in Preston. In Liverpool, electricians are rated Medium. That gives a Preston business with a sound website and a well-kept Google listing a realistic route to page one.

“Preston” is a crowded name. When we checked Google’s autocomplete in October 2026, 9 of the 10 suggestions for “seo preston” were about a person called Preston Seo, so that 100+ figure includes plenty of people who aren’t looking for SEO at all. It isn’t just our industry. Type “electrician preston” and Google suggests Prestonpans, Preston in Victoria, Australia, and Preston, Idaho. Type “estate agents preston” and you get Preston Park in Brighton and Preston Road in Wembley. Google has to work out which Preston you mean, so your website and your listing should leave it in no doubt.

People add “Lancashire” themselves. “Accountants preston lancashire” gets more than 100 searches a month on its own, and Google suggests “estate agents preston lancashire” too. We make sure your pages and your profile cover both ways of searching, in words that still read naturally.

Estate agents have a harder climb. “Estate agents preston” is rated Hard. Go after the narrower searches first: lettings in a particular area, valuations, the questions landlords and sellers actually type.

Builders’ searches are spread thin. “Builders preston” gets fewer than 100 searches a month. The demand is still there, but it’s split across specific jobs and places. A page for each kind of work you do, and each area you cover, catches far more of it than one general page.

What we found

What We Saw When We Checked Preston’s Local Results.

In October 2026 we looked at who ranks for “SEO Preston”, “electrician preston” and restaurants in Preston, and ran simple automated checks on the websites of local electricians and independent restaurants. The samples are small, so treat these as what we found, not as figures for every Preston business.

“SEO Preston”: Nobody Owns It.

The results were a mixed bag: directories listing SEO firms, a press release from 2013, a sponsored blog post from 2011, and city pages from agencies based outside Lancashire, including one in Texas. One page that appeared in the results now shows “page not found”. We’re upfront that we’re not in Preston either: we’re a Manchester team. The difference is a page, and a service, built on real Preston data.

Electricians: Better Than Most, With Some Odd Gaps.

We checked five electricians’ websites.

  • 4 of the 5 had local business schema, the code that tells Google your trade, area and hours. That’s a much better showing than the builders, plumbers and accountants we checked earlier, where none of the 11 had it.
  • 2 of the 5 sent an almost empty page: the words, headings and phone number only appeared once scripts had run in the browser. Google can usually cope with that, but it’s an extra hurdle a plain, fast page doesn’t have.
  • 1 homepage title was aimed at Manchester rather than Preston.
  • 1 ran on a website builder’s free web address instead of its own, with no description for Google to show in results and a 2023 copyright date.
  • 1 had 38 of its 51 images with no description for Google or screen readers.
  • Directories filled much of page one, alongside national pages with “PR1 2” tacked on the end of the title, a sign they were made for every town in the country.
  • Another electrician’s website, listed in a trade directory, showed a hosting company’s “suspended” page.

Restaurants: Easy To Book, Hard For Google To Read.

All three independent restaurants we checked let you book a table online, which is good. But none had restaurant schema, the code that tells Google your opening hours, cuisine and location. Two of the three had no main heading on the homepage, one had no tap-to-call link, and one had a page title that didn’t mention Preston at all. When we searched for an Indian restaurant in Preston, one of the results was a restaurant in Preston, Australia.

What it means for you. Preston’s small businesses aren’t being beaten by slick competitors. They’re being beaten by directories, by pages built for every town, and by small gaps in their own websites. Those are the gaps SEO fixes first.

How we approach Preston

Lancashire, Not Idaho. Make Sure Google Knows Which Preston You Mean.

With Prestons in Brighton, Wembley, Melbourne and Idaho, a vague listing loses out. And plenty of Preston businesses, especially trades, work across Preston, South Ribble and the Ribble Valley, which Google treats as different places.

Here’s how we handle it:

  • Say Lancashire, and say it everywhere. Your town, county and PR postcode on your website, in your page titles and in your Google Business Profile, so there’s no confusion about where you are.
  • Service areas set up properly. Penwortham, Leyland and Bamber Bridge are in South Ribble, not Preston, and Longridge is in the Ribble Valley. If you travel to customers, we set your service area to match where you actually work.
  • Area pages that say something real. Pages for the places you cover most, written for each area, not copied and pasted. A Fulwood homeowner and a Leyland landlord want different reassurance.
  • Consistent details everywhere. Your name, address and phone number matching across Google, Apple Maps, Bing and the directories that rank in Preston, so Google trusts you’re one real business.
  • Reviews that mention where you worked. A simple routine for asking happy customers for reviews. When they naturally mention the area, that helps too.

For city centre businesses, the focus is tighter. Preston has had a Business Improvement District since 2009, run by the North and Western Lancashire Chamber of Commerce, and city-centre businesses with a rateable value of £10,000 or more pay a 1% levy towards it. In a centre this compact, the map pack is about the few streets around you, and reviews, photos, opening hours and a complete profile are what lift you above the business next door.
