Manchester, by the numbers

A City Of Small Businesses. All Chasing The Same Customers.

According to the ONS, there are 24,550 VAT or PAYE registered businesses in the Manchester council area (UK Business Counts, 2026). 87.3% of them are micro businesses with fewer than ten people. The biggest group by far is professional, scientific and technical firms, with 4,455 businesses, or 18.1% of the total. Retail comes next with 2,915, then food and hospitality with 2,035, business support with 2,020 and construction with 1,895.

That mix shapes how search works here. A Manchester accountant isn’t just competing with the firm down the road. They’re competing with thousands of other professional firms, most of them small, many of them with decent websites. To stand out, you need more than a nice homepage.

We’re a Manchester team based in Whitefield, just north of the city off the M60. Two experienced specialists, with design, development and marketing under one roof. We work with Manchester businesses over video call. It keeps things quick, and you never lose half a day to a meeting.

The searches that matter

What People In Manchester Type Into Google Every Month.

These are real searches for local services in Manchester, with monthly UK volume bands and difficulty ratings from Ahrefs (October 2026). They show how much demand is already out there, before anyone spends a penny on ads.

SearchMonthly searchesHow hard to rank
restaurants manchester1,000+Easy
dentist manchester1,000+Hard
seo manchester1,000+Hard
plumber manchester100+Medium
accountants manchester100+Medium
estate agents manchester100+Hard
small business seo manchester100+Not rated

A few things stand out.

The big head terms are hard. “Dentist manchester” and “estate agents manchester” are both rated Hard. That’s what you’d expect in a city this size: established firms have been building their presence for years. For a newer or smaller business, chasing the head term alone is a slow road.

The searches around them are where small businesses win. For every “dentist manchester” there are searches like “emergency dentist Didsbury” or “dentist near me” made from a phone in Chorlton. Each one is smaller, but together they add up, and they’re far easier to rank for. Our keyword research finds those searches for your trade and your part of the city.

Medium is very winnable. Plumbers and accountants sit in the middle. A well-built site, a strong Google Business Profile and steady local work can move a small firm onto page one for searches like these.

What we found

We Checked Who Shows Up In Manchester. Here’s What Stood Out.

In October 2026 we looked at the businesses ranking for a handful of everyday Manchester searches, and ran some simple checks on their websites. The samples are small, so read these as what we saw, not as figures for the whole city.

Directories take a lot of the space. For plumbers, three of the top six results we saw were directories and review sites rather than plumbers’ own websites. Two more were lead-generation style sites. If you’re a plumber and you’re not in the first few results, customers often never reach you at all.

Plenty of local sites are missing the basics. Of the sites we checked:

  • 2 of the 5 hair salons showed their phone number as plain text, with no tap-to-call link and no online booking link on the homepage. On a phone, that’s an extra hurdle for every customer.
  • One of those salons was still on a version of its website software from around 2018, without a secure connection.
  • 2 of the 3 plumbers had no local business schema, the behind-the-scenes code that tells Google your trade, location and opening hours.
  • 3 of the 5 accountants had no local business schema either, even though all five had secure sites and tap-to-call.

The professional firms are polished. The accountants we checked all had secure websites, phone links and clear contact routes. In sectors like this, the basics won’t set you apart. Content that answers real questions, good reviews and a strong map listing will.

SEO in Manchester is a mature market too. When we looked at “SEO Manchester” itself, the results were a mix of directories, established agencies and freelancers. That tells you two things: Manchester businesses have plenty of choice, and the ones that win at search tend to do the fundamentals well and keep at it.

How we approach Manchester

Don’t Try To Rank Everywhere At Once. Own Your Neighbourhood.

Google’s map results favour businesses close to the person searching. Someone looking for a hairdresser in Levenshulme will usually see Levenshulme salons first, not ones in Spinningfields. For most small Manchester businesses, that’s good news. You don’t need to beat the whole city. Just the businesses near you.

So we start where you’re strongest:

  • City centre businesses (M1 to M4, covering the Northern Quarter, Ancoats, Spinningfields and Castlefield) compete in the busiest part of the map. Reviews, photos and a complete Google Business Profile matter most here.
  • Neighbourhood businesses in places like Didsbury, Chorlton, Withington or Levenshulme can often rank faster for searches that name their area, because fewer businesses are trying.
  • Businesses that travel to customers, like trades and mobile services, can set a service area across the city and build pages for the districts they cover most.

There’s also a local story worth knowing. A new Northern Quarter BID was voted in on 14 July 2026, with 91% of votes in favour, and launches in January 2027 with about £4m of extra investment over five years (CityCo). The city centre BID already covers more than 600 levy payers across Market Street, King Street, Deansgate, St Ann’s Square and the Arndale. Both are about bringing more people into the centre. Being easy to find on Google when those people pull out their phones is the other half of the job.
