SEO for builders

SEO For Builders. Quote For Extensions, Not Odd Jobs.

Someone planning an extension or a loft conversion is about to spend serious money. They search. They look at photos. They read reviews and shortlist a few builders before they ring anyone. We make sure your work is what they see, so the bigger jobs come to you. Local SEO from £250 a month, full SEO from £400.

Why good builders get missed

People Choose A Builder With Their Eyes. Most Builders’ Websites Show Them Nothing.

An extension isn’t an emergency. People take their time. They look at a builder’s past jobs, check where they work and read the reviews. Only then do they ask for a quote. If your website can’t answer those questions, the enquiry goes to whoever’s can.

  • 01

    No Photos Of Real Jobs.

A stock photo of a hard hat tells nobody anything. Before and after shots of an extension two streets away tell them everything.

  • 02

    One Page For Everything.

Extensions, lofts, kitchens, garage conversions and repairs, all on one “Services” page. Google can’t tell what you’re best at. So it doesn’t show you for any of it.

  • 03

    Lost Below The Directories.

In the Preston results we checked, directories took the top four places before a single builder’s own website.

  • 04

Hard To Ring From A Phone.

3 of the 5 Preston builders’ sites we checked had no tap-to-call link on mobile.

The searches that matter

What People Type When They’re Planning A Project.

Construction business counts from the ONS (UK Business Counts, 2026), UK volume bands from Ahrefs (October 2026), then the project searches that appear in Google’s autocomplete.

There are a lot of builders out there. Construction is in the top five business groups in every area we’ve researched:

AreaConstruction businessesShare of all businesses
Birmingham3,7959.8%
Manchester1,8957.7%
Liverpool1,83012.2%
Cheshire West and Chester1,56011.3%
Bury1,11014.1%
Preston79512.9%

In Bury, construction is the single largest group. That’s a lot of firms competing for the same jobs. The ones who show up properly online have the edge.

Our Ahrefs data for builders’ searches is thin, but it’s telling. “House extension builders liverpool”, a very specific search, gets more than 100 searches a month on its own. “Builders preston” gets under 100. They’re different cities, so it isn’t a direct comparison, but it fits what autocomplete shows: people search for the project, not just for “builders”.

These searches all appear in Google’s autocomplete in the UK, which means people are typing them (autocomplete doesn’t tell us how often):

  • Extensions: house extension builders near me · builders near me for extension · kitchen extension builders near me · house extension builders manchester · house extension builders liverpool · house extension builders birmingham
  • Loft conversions: loft conversion companies near me · loft conversion near me prices · loft conversion manchester cost · dormer loft conversion manchester · loft conversions manchester photos
  • Other projects: garage conversion builders near me · kitchen extension cost uk · loft conversion cost uk
  • Planning questions: loft conversion planning permission · how big an extension can i build with planning permission

Notice the pattern. People search by project type, by place, by cost, and even for photos. Every one of those is a page a builder could have, and most don’t.

What we found

What We Saw When We Checked Builders’ Results.

In October 2026 we checked who ranks for builders in Preston and roofers in Bury, and ran simple checks on their websites. The samples are small, so treat these as what we found, not figures for every builder.

Builders In Preston (5 Sites Checked)

  • Directories took the top four results: Checkatrade, Yelp, Thomson Local and Hamuch.
  • 3 of the 5 builders’ sites had no tap-to-call link on mobile.
  • None of the 5 had local business schema, the behind-the-scenes code that tells Google your trade, area and hours.
  • One site had 31 of its 47 images with no description for Google, and five separate main headings on one page.

Roofers In Bury (4 Sites Checked), A Close Neighbour Of The Building Trade

  • The top three results were directories, one listing “55 trusted roofers in Bury”.
  • All 4 had tap-to-call and a quote button, but 2 of the 4 had no local business schema.

The pattern is the same as other trades, only stronger. Directories hold the top of the page. The builders below them often have sites that don’t show Google, or customers, what they do best.

How we approach SEO for builders

Show The Work. Name The Project. Cover The Area.

  • A page for each project type you want more of. Extensions, loft conversions, kitchen extensions, garage conversions, new builds. Each one explains what’s involved, how you work, roughly how long it takes or how to find out, and shows the jobs you’ve done.
  • Your past work, properly shown. Project pages with photos, the area and what the client wanted, described so Google can understand them too. A finished extension in Didsbury is proof for the next person in Didsbury.
  • Area pages that say something real. Pages for the towns you work in most, with jobs you’ve done there, not the same page with the town name swapped.
  • Your Google Business Profile, done properly. The right categories, every service listed, photos from your jobs added regularly, and a service area that matches where you work. How we set up Google Business Profiles →
  • Directories on your side. Checkatrade, MyBuilder and the rest rank because people trust them. If you’re on them, we make sure your details match everywhere, so they back up your own listing.
  • Reviews that mention the project. A simple way to ask happy clients for a Google review once the job’s done. A review that mentions the loft conversion and the area helps the next person planning one.

Wrapd Studios: Same Budget, Twice The Enquiries.

Wrapd Studios isn’t a builder, but it’s a local business that sells big-ticket work through enquiries. We rebuilt their website around enquiries and rebuilt their Google Ads around the new site. Their conversion rate doubled. Their cost per enquiry halved. And they had 338 more leads than the same period the year before. Like a builder, they win work by showing what they’ve done.

Anything else, just ask. You’ll get a straight answer from one of us.
